If you can you should check out the study “You’ll only date who?” Gabriela Jaramillo, I feel it fits this discussion well. And you should also brush up on tokenism. In my opinion, the only porn studio with OUTSTANDING diversity is randyblue. And again, maybe it’s only me, but I feel asians barely exist in mainstream porn.
Marc Dylan says
Hey Edger, thank you for the comment. In something as non-essential as porn I don’t think there must be “Excellent” diversity like many things the product produced should reflect what that particular studio’s customer base is responding too. There are different looks for everyone. I agree with you that not many Asians exist in mainstream porn but you also can not say they are never used – again the frequency with which someone is filmed is dependent more on statistical data than the persons race or ethnicity. Also , just by Googling almost ANY TYPE of porn you will find that enough of it is produced to satisfy most peoples wants for any look. Increased demand would result in increased production if one follows most logic unless the person thinks that the people running most main stream gay studios are all prejudiced against non-white looks – something I think is simply not the case.
Steven says
I not trying to say that porn is the most important thing in the world but it does have an effect on the way we view people. In the gay community so much is based on the way we look and gay porn helps define the standard of attractiveness. I think you believe it’s not important because you’re white and can’t put yourself in the position to try an understand from another point of view. You may feel differently if you were Black,Asian, or Hispanic and had a bunch of studios telling you someone who looks like you isn’t attractive.
Pre-judging an entire group of people without treating each person as an individual is wrong. Being skinny and bearish is something that can change.Effeminate and masculine are personality traits. You shouldn’t reduce an entire group of people to a single set of disqualifying traits when you haven’t met all the persons that make up that group. You can have a “preference”, just take the time to understand why you have that preference and if you happen to meet someone that is in that null set that turns your fancy be man enough to acknowledge that you did not have a preference you had a prejudice.
Marc Dylan says
Hey there. Welcome to the site. I respect you opinion and respectfully disagree. In my blog I have said I would never refuse to interact with anyone I was attracted to on the basis of race …that doesn’t really support the idea that im pre-judging an entire group of people . That does not mean that I can not have looks that Im more fond of. Its not reducing an entire set of people to anything . That’s why I don’t believe in saying I would NEVER sleep with any particular race or ethnicity because I have not encountered everyone. This idea that somehow having a type is racist is very silly in my opinion . You said being skinny or bearish is something that can change.. does that mean while they are applicable to a person they are physical traits that are allowed to be taken into account when a person has a type?
Steven says
” That’s why I don’t believe in saying I would NEVER sleep with any particular race or ethnicity because I have not encountered everyone”
I think you should of just said this in your video and that would have killed a lot of this drama. Thanks for taking the time to respond.
Marc Dylan says
Hey Steven , actually I did say that in my last video but people will always hear what they are looking for . Very often the prism which we look through determines what we see. I fully expected the reaction and it was about what I expected most people feel its ok to have a preference a smaller group we very offended. I do appreciate your participation in my blog . I don’t think a civil discourse about any issue is ever a bad thing 🙂
Edger says
There seems to be an assumption that models outside of white or white passing can’t fit the same mold of attractiveness as white people, and that’s where the main problem lies. Many people wouldn’t consider non-white people as “The boy next door” or “All American”, which is ridiculous considering how America came into being…or As for demand, I’ve seen countless models receive an abundance of complaints from customers and continue to work with models that are considered gorgeous by many. Googling an ethnicity and porn popping up contributes to fetishization, exoticism, and white people being the norm, which all manifest in the lives of real people but that’s an issue for another time. I don’t have an issue about peoples racial preferences, I’m merely aware of how they manifest and feel we should question them.
Bobby says
I am a bit confused about all this talk of a lack of diversity in the porn industry. I can’t think of an industry more diverse! Whatever you are into there is a website or a studio that produces it – Black, Latino, Asians, Twinks, Bears, Gym Bodies, Mature, Euro, Collegiate, Lots of Foreskin, Cut Tight, Jocks, She-males, Big Bellies, Gay for Pay, Small Dicks, Huge Dicks, for goodness sakes there is even a site with just Mormons! If someone likes it someone will make it, and does! I think it is a bit strange to think that every site or studio should carry every flavor. I’m not upset that BelAmi doesn’t have hairy daddies! Ultimately we all like different things and it all seems available.

Bobby, I couldn’t have said it any better . You hit the proverbial nail on the head 🙂 thank you for your comment.

Mark,
My personal feelings on the race issue are that the reticence is on the side of the models, not the studio. I myself am black, and I know that in the black community (the Hispanic community as well) there is a great deal of shame surrounding homosexuality, and that maybe that sense of shame is what is keeping a larger number of potential models from pursuing a career in the gay adult entertainment industry. In your experience, have you noticed an overall difference in attitudes between models of the different races, and how marked is that difference?
Marc Dylan says
Very interesting perspective. I have not noticed a difference in attitude. I can tell you that in many areas of the country , ie the bible belt there is a great deal of shame around homosexuality regardless of race, thanks for your comment and insight ; reasonable discourse is always productive and stimulating 🙂

What up Marc? do you think there is a age limit to doing gay porn? or gay for pay? let me know?
Thom says
I think that maybe we are analyzing flip sides of the same coin and both need to be accepted for what they are. On one side, as you have been saying, the market will make what they feel buyers want to purchase and as much as they want to purchase. At the same time (on the other side), the market can create the desire for the public to want a certain look. For example, in this country, for years African Americans wanted to look white because that look was reinforced by popular culture. Once popular culture began recognizing the beauty in diversity (it has a long way to go), desire itself expanded . Not sure if that made sense.
At any rate, Marc, this was the first time I listened to your audio blog and you are so incredibly articulate. I was really glad I listened.
Marc Dylan says
Hey Thom, I certainly see your point. Also, check out part two of the video blog on that topic.

Gee, I didn’t think a simple question would start such a firestorm. Marc, I feel like I owe you an apology for starting all of this. Although, I must say, you handle it with maturity and decency. You’re such a great guy. We could be great friends. 🙂 I feel the same way you do. If somebody doesn’t like my opinion, that’s their problem. Do what makes you happy and speak from the heart. I’m with you bud.
Marc Dylan says
Hey Gary, Lol, I knew it would start a firestorm but I chose to answer it anyway. Thank you for the nice compliment . Im glad that you have enough sense not to live for the opinions of others either 🙂

This is porn. Affirmative action has no place in porn. In fact, if you are gay, you are already a minority, so be happy gay porn is not outlawed!
