I had the pleasure to get together with gay porn star, Conner Habib for this short interview that I hope all you guys enjoy.
Conner Habib is an award-winning writer, lecturer, and gay porn star. After going to grad school at the University of Massachusetts, Conner was stunned by the lack of academic discourse on spirituality and sexuality–two things, which he says, “make the world go ’round.” His response was to become a porn star, but he’s delved in countless other areas too, from play writing to running a Rudolf Steiner spiritual science discussion group in San Francisco.
Marc Dylan: What does 2013 hold for you? Any new projects you’re excited about?
Conner Habib: Working on a book. It’s all about obscure cultural/historical stuff related to sex. Lots of amazing and crazy stuff that the general public is unaware of. Also giving more public lectures (I just spoke at the Museum of Modern Art in New York at their big dome), still trying to find the right theater to put on the play I wrote, making some more porn movies of course – including with a few studios I’ve never worked with, continuing with my sex/relationship advice web show on Logo’s website – NewNowNext.com, and doing some TV stuff. Very excited!
Marc Dylan: What is the strangest message you’ve ever gotten from a fan …anyone that you were surprised to learn was a fan?
Conner Habib: One of the best fan letters ever came from someone who I’ve been a long time fan of. It was a guy who played in an indie rock band called Satisfact, who I loved when I was just out of high school. I had a big crush on one of the members, but he never paid any notice to me. Then, last year, totally out of the blue, he emailed me. He had no idea that I was a fan of his band. Really, it was an awesome moment.
Marc Dylan: Who have been your favorite scene partners?
Conner Habib: Oh Marc, you know we’re never supposed to answer questions like this! I love all the guys that want to get it in me. 🙂 I will say my latest was with Dario Beck for Titan, and I really loved working with him. Not sure when that’s coming out, but wow, what a beautiful and awesome guy. I fucked him outside for a few hours and then after the scene we hung out in our room and listened to music together.
Marc Dylan: What’s your favorite body part? (on your own body, I mean.) Even better, what’s your favorite part on someone else?
Conner Habib: I don’t necessarily have a favorite part on me – I don’t really think of myself in parts like that. Happy to hear anyone else’s ideas, though! As for other guys – I love when a guy has ears that stick out. Don’t ask me why. It’s not like I want to stick my dick in anyone’s ears, I just love the way they look.
Marc Dylan: What would people be surprised to learn about you?
Conner Habib: I don’t know! I guess maybe that I don’t live what people think of as a porn lifestyle. My life is busy, but also sort of quiet – I spend most of my time reading, writing, and jerking off. Oh, and thinking about eating desserts. But I don’t really drink often, I don’t go out too much. I love seeing my porn coworkers when I do go out, but I get sleepy kind of early.
Marc Dylan: Have you ever had a particularly embarrassing moment while filming a scene?
Conner Habib: Not really, it’s kind of hard to embarrass a porn star. Maybe really really early on when I did a puppy play scene with Ricky Sinz and RJ Danvers and I couldn’t get the puppy tail butt plug up my ass whereas RJ could take one twice the size up his butt no problem. But you see? The fact that I can even just reference taking a buttplug shaped like a puppy tail up my ass kind of shows that embarrassment is sort of different for porno people.
Marc Dylan: How does the industry affect your ability to have a normal relationship?
Conner Habib: It makes things so much easier. It filters out people who can’t handle my personality.
Marc Dylan: What was is the worst job you’ve ever worked?
Conner Habib: Working construction for my dad, who was a contractor. That was pretty rough, although the construction guys I worked with made for good masturbation material growing up.
Marc Dylan: What’s been the high point of your career so far? Is there an achievement that you’re most proud of?
Conner Habib: I just did an interview for an Arab language magazine – I think it’s one of the first (if not the first) Arab language magazine interview ever with a gay porn star. That’s huge for me because I’m half Syrian and I get tons of letters from the Middle East from guys who are scared to reveal their sexuality. Of course, not every guy in the Middle East is afraid of being out, nor are all regions/countries the same. But I think having people say gay sex is okay is definitely needed in that part of the world. So that feels really awesome.
Marc Dylan: Do you ever see yourself leaving the adult film industry or otherwise branching out to work on other projects?
Conner Habib: I’ve always been working on other projects, so there’s not much need for me to leave porn to do it. Before you get into porn, lots of people like to tell you that it’ll close doors for you. But if you’re not ashamed of it, if you let it be a healthy part of your life, then it actually opens a lot of doors and helps you branch out into all the other things you’re interested in, too.
Marc Dylan: Is the adult industry what you thought it would be prior to getting into it?
Conner Habib: Sort of yes, sort of no. Before I was in porn, I idolized all the gay porn stars. I still do, to some extent – but the feeling is a bit different. From the outside, porn can be this amazing sex-positive, gay-affirming thing. From the inside, it can often just feel like business. So you lose a little bit of what makes it so great once you get into it. I try to balance that out by giving it my all when I’m shooting and just having fun so the viewer can feel that enthusiasm and excitement too. When I think about the viewer getting turned on, it enlivens the whole thing for me again.
Marc Dylan: In the future do you think you will view your experience in the industry as a positive or negative part of your life?
Conner Habib: Like I said, very positive. That doesn’t mean there haven’t been times when it’s been difficult. But any job is difficult, any life path has its issues. So I try to see all the good that’s come out of the choices I’ve made, and honestly, there’s a lot there that I’m very happy with and that I feel really good about.
Marc Dylan: Thanks for taking the time to answer these questions, anything you would like to say to your fans?
Conner Habib: Even if we haven’t met yet, if you’re a fan, I’m so happy to have you in my life. It’s huge, and you make it easier and more gratifying for me to do everything I’m doing. Thank you so much for paying attention, for jerking off, for listening, for being amazing. If you have anything you’d like to say to me, please reach out to me on twitter @connerhabib
